How do you open up conversation at a party where you are by yourself and don't know anyone?

Walk up to a group of 3 - 4 in conversation.
Start listening.
If the context of the conversation isn’t immediately clear, asked someone not currently engaged what they’re talking about.
Wait for an appropriate time to interject.
Smoothly join the conversation and find a place to introduce yourself as soon as possible.
